Smokey Joe & The Kid are two killer beat masters from Bordeaux, passionate about hip hop, bass music and groovy melodies from the early 20th century. Percussion solos played with scratch, beats and melodies are performed with an MPC; everything is played live.
Their USP comes from a clear hip hop obsession based on samples inspired by traditional American music repertoire. After a widely lauded debut album approved by the listeners in 2013, the two beat maestros are getting their comeback ready on the French electronic scene with all the pomp and circumstance of a provincial dandy. Their second album, “Running To The Moon“, drops this Springtime in 2016. The raw efficiency of their debut “Nasty Tricks” gives way to a sweeter melancholy with heady melody lines and a hazy atmosphere in this brand new opus. Freed from the Swing to give room to Jazz, Blues and Soul, the duo offers an even more coherent and cinematic album where song and pop chorus make their way through a cobblestone road marked out by hip hop.
Smokey Joe & The Kid gathered their musical family around this project and collaborated with a show- stopping pool of artists including: Fred Wesley, Pigeon John, ASM, Chill Bump, Blake Worrell, Youthstar, Charles X, Yoshi, Ua Tea, NON Genetic and DJ Netik.
Their new show featuring UK rapper MYSTRO (aka Mysdiggi) and including video performance, is ready to hit european stages in 2016. Smokey Joe & The Kid have already performed at some of the UK finest events : Bestival, Shambala, Secret Garden Party, Boomtown, Nozstock Festival & more !
Kaptin Barrett, BoomTown’s music programmer, comments on Smokey Joe & The Kid
I’ve been playing their stuff for a while with Big Swing Sound and we were both on the Swingimajig line up together so I got to see them perform. Plus their new live band includes Mystro, a rapper I’ve been putting on at gigs for well over a decade who never fails to entertain the crowd.
Smokey Joe & The Kid feat. Mystro will play The Ballroom; the playground of BoomTown’s ‘elite’. Where one can hobnob with bankers; clerics let their hair down, cocktails flow like water and sequined socialites rule the roost.
Swing is the sound and money is no object. This is the hangout for the 1% of the 1%ers, there’ll be no riff-raff, hoi-polloi or scallywags around this yard! You can find The Ballroom on Mayfair Avenue.
At Boomtown Fair, the UK’s most immersive and escapist festival, be transported to what feels like a different time in the Boomtown narrative. With a set up of structures, installations and nano-festivals where you can lose yourself over and over again.
