Boomtown Fair has established itself as one of Europe’s most creative and inspiring events on the festival scene. With its diverse lineups, crazy story-lines and immersing festival-goers within the narrative. The festival becomes a temporary city for 4 days a year, complete with nine districts sprawling across four areas and festival-goers become citizens of this creative landscape that reflects the current global society.

Boomtown really an indescribable experience, one that continues to push the boundaries of live music events with an ever-evolving storyline that is sure to immerse you into the festival whether it be your first time or tenth!

We got the opportunity to fire some questions off to the music and theatre departments, speaking to Kaptain Barrett, Boomtown’s Head of Music and Natalie Smith, the festivals Creative Producer. This is the first part of a two-part series, we speak to Boomtown’s set designers next time.

Kaptin Barrett – Head of Music

-Kaptin-Barrett-1024x555-Gig Addict Speaks To Boomtown Fair’s Kaptin Barrett & Natalie Smith

What’s your job title and what does your role entail for Boomtown?

My official title is Head Of Music, so my job is generally to make sure the line-up remains as exciting, inspiring and tasty as possible.

What’s an average day to day for you?

Largely, I’m in the office during the day trawling through a mixture of music and spreadsheets, trying to keep on top of emails and fine tuning next year’s line up.  In the night I’m often watching a band or two.

How would you describe Boomtown Fair to a newbie?

It’s a pop up world that pulls you in every direction.  A multi sensory weekend adventure that could make you laugh, cry, dance, sing, lose yourself, find yourself, lose your friends and find new ones, all in the space of an hour.

Which of the new areas are you looking forward to the most?

I don’t think I could choose one over the others sorry, they all offer something exciting but are totally different.  I’ll be DJing at the Soca Street Party in Paradise Heights though so definitely looking forwards to that one.

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s event or who would you recommend festival attendees check out?

Again, that’s like trying to pick a favourite child but definitely both Dubioza Kolektiv and Deluxe on the Town Centre.  They’ve both played before and they were totally epic.

Natalie Smith – Creative Producer

-Natalie-Smith-Gig Addict Speaks To Boomtown Fair’s Kaptin Barrett & Natalie Smith

What’s your job title and what does your role entail for Boomtown? What’s an average day to day for you?

I wear many hats and believe me no one day is the same for me but my official title is Creative Producer, which basically means I get to create all the fun! I produce the theatrical side of the entire show, which includes booking all of the micro venues you see lining the streets of Boomtown, right the way through to the large scale shows which take place on the main stages and all the crazy bits in between!

I also keep an eye on the visual side of things and develop all of the theatrical and storyline content for each district. For me, it’s all about encouraging people to explore all the areas of the city, to interact with our performers, sets, venues and the Boomtown story and a big part of achieving that is helping to develop our amazing crews, so that we stay as creative, innovative and as mad as possible!

How would you describe Boomtown Fair to a newbie?

Boomtown is quite simply – out of this world!

Which of the new areas are you looking forward to the most?

Seriously, it’s almost impossible to choose! This year the new districts have all got a really strong theatrical focus to them and I’m really excited about the direction that we have been able to take with the new shows and characters. But ultimately it has to be seeing the whole thing come together. I’m not sure I can say anymore – there are too many secrets that I mustn’t give away!

Who are you most looking forward to seeing at this year’s event or who would you recommend festival attendees check out?

In a word – Morcheeba. I cannot wait! I’ve been wanting to see them for years and begging the programming team to book them and finally they have! This and the Deathchant takeover in the Scrapyard. It’s thanks to hardcore techno that I am where I am now.

See what’s in store for the festival’s ever-evolving storyline for Chapter 10 – ‘The Machine Cannot Be Stopped’

Tickets sold out in a record 4 months but the festival will be running a resale of unclaimed deposit tickets in June. Tickets for glamping, pre-pitched tents and extras still available.
