Boomtown Fair, the UK’s most immersive and escapist festival, be transported to what feels like a different time in the Boomtown narrative. Forget what you know about festivals, it’s not about sitting by the “main stages” all day drinking shit beer. BoomTown has a set up of structures, installations and nano-festivals where you can lose yourself over and over again.
The festival has a layout that is crafted round a central storyline that expands with each year. Chapter 8 is due to take place Thursday 11 – Sunday 14 August 2016, at Matterley Estate, nr. Winchester, Hampshire
Every kind of musical genre is celebrated at BoomTown, from ska, folk, gypsy, reggae, world, punk, pirate and disco to electro-swing, jazz, blue-grass, bass, jungle and techno, all enjoyed in a spirit of unity and freedom. A huge amount of great music with 500+ artists performing on 100+ stages
We had a quick chat to Kaptin Barrett, BoomTown’s music programmer
Does the festival actively seek out talented new / unsigned acts?
Bringing through and supporting up and coming acts is one of the most important things for us. Although to tell you the truth, most of them get booked just because they’re really good rather than any conscious decision based around their position on the playing field. The music at BoomTown isn’t cool in the traditional sense, so rarely will anyone choose it for advancing their career, they start Ska bands, or Punk bands or Hillbilly Bluegrass bands, because that’s just what they love to play. So any time we hear a new band who have chosen to adopt a sound that suits the festival, that’s really exciting for us.
Any success stories of acts working their way up the bill.
There have been a number of acts who have moved from the smaller stages up to the bigger ones and a lot of those bands will be invited back each year because we’re excited to see their progression. Often they will move up the bill but a lot of the bands don’t have those kind of ego-issues, they just want to play music and have a good time.
How the bookers come across up and coming or unsigned acts.
We spend our lives going to gigs every night and researching acts. Often, like most things, it will be a recommendation from someone we trust that attracts our interest. We also have an application process online for bands, though I’d say only 2% of our overall applications are actually suitable for the festival.
We are showcasing some of the up and coming acts on the BoomTown Fair line up
ONE CITY, NINE DISTRICTS: OldTown – Balkan, Gypsy, Klezmer, Pirate
The dark back streets and shady alleyways of BoomTown’s ancient city port lure the unsuspecting traveller beyond the confines of the map and into another world of seductive sirens singing under street lights and pirate parties storming every tavern. OldTown plays host to the 90-ft pirate ship The Jolly Dodger and the OldTown main stage, which will feature some of the world’s finest exponents of gypsy, Balkan beats, Klezmer and pirate music:
Babylon Circus, Los de Abajo, Bohemian Betyars, N.O.H.A,Les Yeux d’la Tête, Fat Bastard Gang Bastard Gang Band + many more!
A playground for the upper echelons of BoomTown society, where bankers, socialites, aristocrats and secret societies rub shoulders. The well-heeled theatrical high-jinx of Mayfair plays out whilst housing the biggest Electro-Swing and Vintage Remix line up in the world:
Parov Stelar, Molotov Jukebox, The Correspondents (Live Band), Dutty Moonshine Big Band, Smokey Joe & The Kid feat. Mystro, Electric Swing Circus, The Sweet Life Society, The Carny Villains + many more!
Wild West – Folk, World, Bluegrass, Ska, World
A raucous ex-prospecting settlement populated by cowboys, showgirls, bounty hunters and bandits, and ruled by the no-nonsense Sheriff. Away from the district’s dusty trails and ramshackle saloons, three main stages dosey-doe day and night to a rootin’ tootin’ line-up of Folk, Bluegrass, Ska and World music:
Imelda May, Levellers, Afro Celt Sound System, Ojos de Brujo, Nahko & Medicine For The People, Seth Lakeman, Lau, Joe Driscoll & Sekou Kouyate, Steve N Seagulls + many more!
Barrio Loco – Hip-Hop, Techno, House
The city’s Latin quarter is a neighbourhood that rarely sleeps, with a revolutionary spirit and carnival atmosphere run deep through its streets. The infamous Bassline Circus brings their outdoor show ‘Athletes of the Night’, and in addition to the district’s bass-heavy hub Poco Loco the all-new Vamos stage plays host to a bill of house and techno trailblazers:
Foreign Beggars, Pharaohe Monch (Live), Nightmares on Wax, DJ Craze, Derrick Carter, Derrick May, Jackmaster, Shadow Child, Skream, Reeps One, Octave One (Live), JFB, DJ Format & Abdominal + many more!
Supported by a collection of the UK’s top Psy promoters (IllumiNaughty, Tribe of Frog, Liquid Records and Return to the Source), the three stages of this district are found in two stunning woodland locations and an inner-city venue, and unite crews, artists and party people from all over the international Psychedelic Trance community:
Every revolution needs an HQ, and BoomTown Chapter 8’s uprising will be bubbling away in the brand new Sector 6! Located in the heart of the district is a power station commandeered by masked revolutionaries, leading their charge to a bass-heavy soundtrack of Garage, Grime, Bassline and Dubstep:
AC Slater, Chris Lorenzo, Deep Medi Takeover, Diemantle, DJ Zinc, MJ Cole, Ms. Dynamite, Newham Generals, Om Unit, So Solid Crew, Special Request, Zed Bias & MC Trigga + many more!
ChinaTown– Ska, Punk, Ska-Punk
The festival’s hub of technology and trade; have your senses challenged from all angles, with intense aromas, neon lights and detailed shop facades creating an intoxicating vibe of mystery, mayhem and music. At the heart of the bustling neighbourhood are the sounds of ska and punk, music that lies at the very core of BoomTown’s history and heritage:
Madness, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, Mad Caddies, The Selecter, Bad Manners, Neville Staple Band, The Slackers, Melbourne Ska Orchestra, Chainska Brassika, The King Blues + many more!
TrenchTown – Reggae, Dub, Jungle
One of the festival’s most popular districts and the city hub of all things reggae, dub, dancehall and jungle. At its heart is the Lion’s Den, an ancient Mayan temple towering 40ft into the sky and the UK’s largest dedicated reggae stage. Elsewhere the Hidden Woods stage is all about the beach party vibrations and deep into the woods Tangled Rootscelebrates sound system culture:
Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley, Fat Freddy’s Drop, Morgan Heritage, Inner Circle, Tarrus Riley, Junior Kelly, Tanya Stephens, Kabaka Pyramid & The Bebble Rockers, Channel One Meets Mad Professor + many more!
DSTRKT 5 – DnB, Hardcore, Bass
The neon-lit, underground epicentre of the city, where little is off limits and all manner of twisted fantasies play out in its late night venues. Featuring three brand new stages (Robotika, Scrapyard, Sewage Works) and the incredible nine-storey Bang Hai Palace, a flame-throwing bass music mecca and the city’s most striking skyline spectacle:
Dub Phizix, Calibre, My Nu Leng, TQD, DJ Hype & Hazard
Angerfist, Vandal, Altern-8 + many more!
