Boomtown Fair 2019: Music, Good Times & Sustainability

Boomtown Fair has established itself as one of Europe’s most creative and inspiring events on the festival scene. With its diverse lineups, crazy story-lines and immersing festival-goers within the narrative. This year Boomtown has doubled down on their Green Mission with banning the sale of single-use plastic, bringing in compostable cups to all bars and all serveware will be compostable. The festival organisers will need the public to play their part too and it’s really not that hard to have less impact environmentally while at the festival.

The festival returns to the Matterley Estate over 7th – 11th August 2019.

Having grown in size from 1,000 to 66,000 capacity Boomtown’s ongoing priority is to protect the environment from the impact of an event this size.  To raise awareness amongst the public that attend and encourage them to make changes to their behaviour both at the festival but also beyond. Chapter 11 will be in every way a Radical City, with sustainable initiatives embedded into all of the event planning and infrastructure and on the ground. Here is our rundown on the acts we are most looking forward to and easy ways to be sustainable.

The Streets

Take Your Shit Home!

Whatever you plan to take to the festival take it home with you. Don’t buy “throw-away” tents or camping equipment, get something decent you can reuse at other festivals you attend, in the long run, it will save you money! Don’t bring items that you won’t be able to take back home again. The less you bring the better, that way you won’t have to carry as much back with you after 4 days of partying!

Travelling To The Festival

One of the best ways to be sustainable, as well as taking all your shit home, is by using public transport and National Express coaches. You can book your coach travel here.

If public transport is not your scene consider car sharing – GoCarShare – whether your looking for a lift or have space in your car. It can save you money on the travel cost and is considering the environmental impact with potential fewer vehicles travelling to the festival.

Black Futures

Refill, Not Landfill

In a concerted effort to make Boomtown Fair more sustainable and to help Festival-goers consider their use of single-use plastics, plastic drinks bottles will not be available at this year’s event. Why not consider a re-usable water bottle. They can be picked up from a lot of shops, online or grab yourself a Boomtown branded reusable bottle! Water bottles can be refilled for free at every water tap throughout the Festival site.

Sustainable / Ethical Products

If you are buying new products consider businesses that offer ethically made products, considering the environment. They are really not that hard to find and don’t cost the earth!

We came across Kovered, who offer bags and other accessories. Re-use, recycle and re-purpose is central to their business. They pride themselves on fully recyclable packaging solutions, only sourcing sustainably-certified timber, and they plant one tree for every 25 products sold. If you are travelling light or need a bag to carry your reusable water bottle, alcohol and rain-mac around the festival Kovered bags have easy pouches, pockets for quick access perfect for when in a busy crowd, as well as having secure pockets for valuables.

Prophets Of Rage

Probably the simplest and easiest of all, throw your rubbish in the bin. There are plenty of general waste and recycling bins on the festival site to dispose of your rubbish responsibly.

Nobody likes picking up rubbish or cleaning up after someone else but if you see rubbish on the ground its takes a few seconds out your life to do a good deed and throw it in a bin. Good Karma! You could also earn a bit of money back. With the support of industry experts Closed Loop and Plastico, Boomtown Fair will be introducing a 10p cup deposit scheme. 10 cups returned = £1.
